moment on medicare. there are three things, i think to keep in mind with respect to medicare and the republicans. the first is republicans have been trying to confuse this issue by saying president obama cut $700 million from the medicare program. there are two problems with that, first is it didn't cut a red cent from what seniors are getting through medicare. what it did do was created efficiencies by making sure the insurance companies and the pharmaceutical companies that were getting windfall payment; that there would be greater efficiency and that helps the taxpayer. but what makes it actually stunning that the republicans have been accusing is that
6:56 am
congressman ryan's plan is identical. >> stephanie: yeah. he thought it was a great idea too to cut the waste. >> yeah. and the affordable care act, obamacare provides significant new benefits for seniors. it provides them with preventive care services for free and for those seniors who have major drug costs who fall into the gap in coverage called the doughnut hole, they are getting help right now. they are getting 50% in discounts. of course if governor romney has his way, those improvements would be eliminated. and then you get to what the vice president said yesterday about voucher care. you know, we have a guaranteed benefit for seniors, and what the republicans want to do is they want to give seniors a voucher and with each passing
6:57 am
year, the size of the voucher compared to total medicare costs will diminish and the amount of money that seniors will have to pay out of their own pocket will grow. and increasingly this will be unaffordable for seniors. so it really transforms the medicare program. so i think anybody who thinks the medicare program is important for themselvesor their parents or grandparents or in the future for those people who will be 65 in the not too distant future, this is really a very important issue. >> stephanie: absolutely. ron, so sorry we're at a hard break. thank you so much for taking time with us. appreciate it. >> you bet. >> stephanie: all right. 58 minutes after the hour. we roll along here in charlotte north carolina here at the
